Wool rugs and bath, from $110
Start with the floor.
Hand-loomed wool rugs in five earth colors, with travertine and Turkish cotton for the bath to match. Buy the rug now and the towels next spring, and the room still goes together.
Rugs and runners
Buy the rug first
A 6 × 9 rug covers 54 square feet, more than twice the floor space of a sofa. Whatever color it is, the rest of the room has to work with it. So choose it first, then pick the wood, linen and towels to match.

Why wool
Wool looks deeper in late light. Printed polyester looks flat.
Plenty of rugs under $300 are polypropylene printed with an old pattern. They photograph well and look thin in a sunny room, and the pile flattens where the chairs stand. Ours are wool, cotton and stone, from $110 to $495.
Five colors. Any two work together.
Umber, Ochre, Sienna, Tufa and Terre Verte are earth pigments painters have used for centuries. Every piece we sell comes in one of them, and any two sit well side by side. Order the swatch set for $10 and lay all five on your floor before you buy.
